The travel-breakfasts at home of the stylist Angela Ibáñez on IG Stories

  • Post category:PEOPLE

In the framework of our MYBARRIO Online #EnCasa – Fest on Instagram, we have invited Angela Ibañez to tell and share her travel-breakfasts. Discover how Angela manages to change the rules of confinement: every day, she recreates an atmosphere from her small terrace in Barcelona. Every day, a city and its traditions, with the decoration, the outfit, the makeup and above all, the gastronomy. That led to the beginning of a series, which Angela called ‘Home Retreat‘, and which happens every day on her Instagram account @angela_ibanez.

Today, she tells us a little more about the process, and to accompany each breakfast, Angela selected MYBARRIO products #shoplocal #shopsall. And this Friday 24/4 at 11am CET, you have an appointment to eat breakfast with her on IG Stories.

I am receiving an incredible amount of messages on a daily basis and very beautiful, from people who are feeling more motivated at home to cook, who get up wanting to know where I have traveled; who enjoy watching these little moments that I share; that I make them travel and that they are not the result of a great Netflix production but of someone who is going through the same moment as other humans right now. So I am delighted to see the result that is giving something that has come so deep inside.

It all started because I have always loved cooking and I saw that, like any other routine we do every day, I got tired of having the same breakfast every day; to assume that I had to start the day in a certain way out of pure habit, when the decision of how to start each day and face this confinement is really in our hands.
In addition, I was changing furniture, painting objects and trying to renovate the space a little each week to add fresh touches to the home and add more color to my days.
Above all, it was clear to me that I was not going to let myself be pressured to be productive on the job these days and that whatever I did, I was going to do it for pure well-being and fun.

All this, together with a large amount of material that I already had at home, gave rise to the series of travel-breakfasts called ‘Home Retreat‘ that you can see on my profile every day.
In them, I am fortunate to be able to give a second life to all the fabrics, clothes, souvenirs from other countries and things that I have been storing in recent years, or even to highlight the power of everyday items that we all have at home and with that we can also create.

An Angela Ibáñez interview by MYBARRIO  :

Before the coronavirus, what did you do in life?

Well, I am a stylist and before the Coronavirus my work, which I love, kept me so busy that I hardly took enough time to stop, meditate or read. I let myself go in a frantic rhythm of shopping, fittings and filming, very fun and enriching, but in which I hardly stopped at home to sleep or go to my yoga or gym classes. Of course it took days for me, but until now I hadn’t realized how necessary it is to ‘stop’ in general. And now that my work and the entire sector have been suspended, I have no choice but to focus on myself. Which has been a gift and has inspired me more than ever.

Now during quarantine, what is your day to day?

The first thing I do when I get up every morning, from the first day in this confinement, is my daily Yoga practice. I read an article that said that how you invest your first minutes in the morning will define the rest of your day. So I decided that I would start them like this.
Then come my colorful and tasty breakfasts, and the rest of the hours I improvise depending on whether I feel like reading, painting, training or what the body asks of me.
I end all my days with a few minutes of meditation to reflect a little on everything that happens.

Where are you from? And how did you arrive to Barcelona?

I am from Yecla (Murcia) and I have been living in Barcelona for almost 5 years, but I did many laps before arriving here!
I studied in Madrid, where I immediately started to work in movie costumes and to live / travel throughout Spain. After a few years I understood how fundamental it was to learn languages for further growth in my career, since I worked in many foreign films, so I decided to go to London to learn English. I spent 3 of the best years of my life there and it was an experience that made me grow both professionally and personally, plus I had a great opportunity to work on amazing Warner Bros movies and start my career as a fashion and advertising stylist too.
After a few years in London, I decided to focus more on fashion and advertising, and look for a better quality of life (a Murcian cannot live without sun), so I came to Barcelona. And here I am 😉

3 words to describe yourself.

Emotion, Vitality, Sincerity.

Your district (barrio) and to what places in your neighborhood (bar, restaurant, street etc) will you go as soon as the confinement is over.

My neighborhood is Sant Antoni, and I am looking forward to visiting Carrer Parlament and the terraces around here on a sunny day with my dear friends and neighbors.
Undoubtedly, a craft beer from Barna Brew and its version of fried potatoes will come first. Also go to La Sucursal Aceiteira; to the A Mi Manera bar, where they are charming; to all the wine and beer fairs that they do in Carrer Comte D’Urgell often with live music and to taking many walks around Montjuic.

Why do you feel a connexion with MYBARRIO?

Because we are all MYBARRIO. Our districts unite us as well as they do during this confinement.  Right now we are more MYBARRIO than ever <3

Tell us how you prepare your outfits?

I have a great predilection for fabrics, especially natural, and for color. There is always a concept or character to develop in each project, but I tend to be guided a lot by the textures and colors, by their psychology. And of course, you can’t miss vintage or second-hand clothes in my works; they are the ones that always bring more personality and a special touch to the looks.

Your 3 favorite colors.

Red, pink and lilac (as you can easily check on my account).

Your favorite at home recipe.

I could not choose between Red Curry with smoked tofu  (La Vietmanita style) or vegan lasagna without gluten.

What things do you do at home now that you didn’t do before confinement?

Basically everything. I used to cook a lot and read from time to time, but now I do such a large amount of things that give me so much well-being day by day, I constantly wonder how everything will be when we get out of this and how I can alternate my work with many of the activities that I already I have acquired as a routine.
I am doing online courses, painting, reading, meditating, training, teaching Twerking classes, cooking, re-decorating the house… I am missing hours a day!

How do you get inspired? Where do your creative ideas come from?

I think that precisely stopping, resting and not asking myself to ‘create’ during the first weeks of confinement, made my mind reset and generated many ideas. I started using color as therapy in my clothes, food and anywhere in the house, and that put me in such a good mood that everything went naturally.

What advice can you give us to be creative at home?

Something that I always like to highlight is observing the beauty of everyday life: the light that enters our houses, a bowl with many fruits, the mix of clothes and patterns or color that we carry these days… everything is a source of inspiration. The question is to test. We do not necessarily have to generate a final product these days, but it is a great time to test, fail, learn from it, and thus be able to develop much more polished ideas.

MYBARRIO in 3 words.

Culture, Design, Light.

About Home Retreat, how do you choose your destinations?

I usually improvise the destinations overnight, choosing them based on the ingredients I have at home and what I feel like having for breakfast, along with the possibilities of the stock or elements that I have. Above all, I am fascinated by being able to give a second life to many objects or garments that have been forgotten for years and to which we can give such special use now. We are not allowed to go outside but that does not prevent us from dreaming and ‘traveling’.
As I said recently, complaining is of no use to us. Live in the present and laugh a lot.

What are your next destinations?
  1. Breakfast in Catalonia.
  2. French Provence Picnic Breakfast.
  3. Design breakfast in Copenhagen.
  4. Breakfast in Cairo, Egypt.
  5. Finland breakfast.
  6. Iceland breakfast.
  7. Breakfast Beijing, China.
What are your next projects from home?

I am preparing several projects with Barcelona photographers and other personals that I hope to be able to carry out away from home soon. Although I have recently done an online editorial on Skype with Laura Martinova and different models, whom I video-called one by one to see their wardrobes, and it was great. So I do not rule out continuing to work on other possibilities if the confinement is extended. Meanwhile, I keep taking photos with sets that I improvise at home, creating brand content or establishing ideas that come to me.

What learning do you get out of this period for the “after?”

I believe (and I hope) that this confinement marks a before and after in the population. Personally, I always tried to do as many more things as possible to feel productive and fill the time. But it is not because you are doing less in one day that you are less productive or less creative.
I want to believe that the quality of our thoughts and actions will prevail over the quantity, and that the time that we are spending alone and working on ourselves, will make brilliant ideas flourish with much more emotion and personality.
I am left with the union and peace that the situation has generated, despite the chaos.

Thank you Angela for your spark, joy, creativity… so MYBARRIO;)
