The ideal society that B. F. Skinner painted in his novel-essay Walden Dos is the main inspiration for the best-known building of the Taller de Arquitectura headed by Ricardo Bofill and located in Sant Just Desvern.
Walden 7 is a monumental space that draws from the foundations of the Barri Gaudí de Reus, taking them to the extreme until it achieves an architectural icon that also ennobles its urban environment.
One of the best ways to describe the building was given by the poet José Agustín Goytisolo, who worked writing texts for the Taller de Arquitectura and dedicated these words to Walden 7, with which we have opened our article:
Just like in a cave or magic castle
everything was going to change in that place,
everything was going to change because in the dream
impossible things happen easily.
An experimental project that includes 446 apartments, which are distributed over 14 floors and are grouped around five patios, to ensure that the public and the private blend together.
Digging deeper into the building, its exterior facade mimics an enormous fortress of striking red color. It opens to the outside through large openings at different levels.
The interior courtyards maintain a dynamic color tone, this time in deep blue and yellow.
The main courtyard, at the entrance, recovers the concept of street and square, promoting an indoor-outdoor lifestyle for its inhabitants. A microcosm that allows you to disconnect from the chaos outside.
Walden 7 is “a universe of shapes and colors that satisfy the aesthetic dimension itself,” explains Anna Bofill. An oasis community, made up of houses that in turn are a combination of modules. The flexibility of each of them is defined by the number of modules that make it up: one only for a study, a complete house with four on one floor or also in duplex format.
This innovative proposal is one of the most iconic buildings of its architect and its city. A reflection on the life of people and society of his time, which like the novel from which it takes its name dreams of a society in which the individual can fully develop. The magic of Walden 7 is there.
